Which Industries Are Microsand (High-Rate Ballasted) Sedimentation Tanks Suitable For? Analysis of Seven Typical Application Scenarios

The strength of microsand (high-rate ballasted) sedimentation tanks lies in "rapid removal of suspended solids and colloids, chemically enhanced phosphorus removal, and efficient solid-liquid separation in space-constrained settings." Wherever the conditions involve "high turbidity, high SS, phosphorus removal requirements, limited land, and need for rapid startup," it is typically a priority candidate. The following seven categories are the most typical deployment scenarios.

I. Quick Overview of Seven Typical Scenarios

Industry / Wastewater Type

Main Removal Targets

Municipal WWTP upgrading / capacity expansion

Advanced SS and phosphorus removal, chemically enhanced primary treatment

Combined sewer overflow (CSO) / stormwater treatment

Rapid removal of SS and particulate COD, reducing overflow pollution

Steel / coal chemical / coal washing wastewater

High-concentration suspended solids, coal slurry, dust

Stone / building materials / grinding wastewater

Rapid separation and reuse of high-turbidity suspended solids

Low-temperature low-turbidity raw water for water supply plants

Enhanced coagulation and sedimentation, shortened retention time

Industrial wastewater pretreatment

Pre-removal of turbidity for high-SS high-turbidity water, reducing downstream load

Emergency / seasonal treatment

Start-stop on demand, rapid deployment

II. Category-by-Category Analysis

① Municipal WWTP upgrading / capacity expansion. In upgrading projects where land is difficult to allocate for additional sedimentation tanks, microsand sedimentation tanks can serve as a "compact weapon" for advanced phosphorus and SS removal, controlling total phosphorus within stricter limits with chemical phosphorus removal agents; they can also serve as flexible capacity expansion units during dry/rainy season flow fluctuations.

② Combined sewer overflow (CSO) and stormwater treatment. Rainy season overflow has large volume and rapid inflow, requiring "fast treatment, fast startup." Microsand sedimentation tanks achieve effectiveness immediately upon startup with high surface loading rates, significantly reducing SS and particulate COD in a short time, mitigating impact on receiving water bodies.

③ Steel / coal chemical / coal washing wastewater. This type of wastewater has high suspended solids concentration and fine particles; conventional sedimentation requires large footprints and is prone to turbidity carryover. Microsand ballasting causes fine particles to "clump and settle," producing clearer and more stable effluent while facilitating subsequent reuse.

④ Stone / building materials / grinding wastewater. Wastewater dominated by stone powder and abrasives has high turbidity and high SS; microsand sedimentation tanks can rapidly clarify and enable clean water reuse, saving fresh water and discharge costs.

⑤ Low-temperature low-turbidity raw water for water supply plants. Low-temperature low-turbidity water produces fine flocs that are difficult to settle—a long-standing challenge for conventional sedimentation. Microsand adds weight to flocs, significantly improving settleability, shortening retention time, and enhancing effluent stability.

⑥ Industrial wastewater pretreatment. As the first "turbidity removal gate" for high-SS high-turbidity water, it first removes suspended solids and colloidal load, making subsequent biological or advanced treatment easier and more stable.

⑦ Emergency and seasonal treatment. Purely physicochemical with no biological acclimation period, it can be mobile or rapidly deployed, suitable for emergency pollution control, temporary enhancement, and seasonal peak treatment.

III. Selection Tips

Microsand sedimentation tanks are physicochemical separation units, primarily removing suspended and some colloidal pollutants, with essentially no removal capacity for dissolved COD, ammonia nitrogen, or total nitrogen—if your water quality is dominated by dissolved pollutants, it should be used as a pre-treatment unit combined with biological or advanced treatment. For highly variable water quality, pre-equalization is recommended; dewatering equipment downstream of sand-containing sludge should consider wear-resistant configurations; dosing combinations should be determined through jar tests first.
